New Poll: Nearly Two-Thirds of North Dakotans Support Death Tax Repeal

Thirty-one percent less likely to vote for Senator Heitkamp if she opposes repeal, according to American Business Defense Council

WASHINGTON - The American Business Defense Council today released a new non-partisan poll finding that 62% of North Dakotans support repealing the Federal Estate Tax (aka, death tax). The poll also showed that 31 percent of North Dakotans are less likely to vote for Senator Heidi Heitkamp if they know she is opposed to repealing the estate tax

"North Dakotans understand that the death tax harms family business owners and ranchers expect their federal lawmakers to fight to repeal it," explained Dick Patten, President of the American Business Defense Council. "The most recent polling shows that North Dakotans understand the impact of the tax and strongly support repeal. By doing the right thing and voting for repeal Senator Heitkamp will join her colleague Senator John Hoeven and show that she is in touch with her constituents concerns.

The poll results also found that a whopping 67 percent of North Dakotans know that the death tax forces family members to sell part or all of a family farm or ranch. 61 percent agree that repealing the tax will make it easier for minority business owners to hold on to their farm or business. Senator Heitkamp has not committed to voting for repeal, while Senator Hoeven is a cosponsor of S. 860, the Death Tax Repeal Bill of 2015.

Patten continued: “While Washington stalls, the federal estate tax is threatening the continuity of family-owned businesses and ranches. We hope Senator Heitkamp will do the right thing and vote to repeal this destructive tax."
